Tax Time for Licence Plates

Phnom Penh: The Ministry of National Defense has instructed officials to collect tax from owners of all vehicles using Royal Cambodian Armed Forces license plates. The notice also states that owners must submit their tax declarations and payments at provincial or district tax branches or at Canadia Bank, Acleda Bank, Vattanac Bank, Cambodia Public Bank or any other banks that has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the ministry.

Owners of tax-exempt vehicles must request a vehicle label from the General Department of Taxation. For private vehicles that carry RCAF plates or any other official insignia, owners must pay registration fees as the exemption only applies to vehicles that are registered as state property. For owners of private vehicles with personalized license plates, tax is also now due. Failure to pay will result in the plate being revoked. Fines will be levied against those who fail to pay their licence tax. The GDT is cooperating with authorities to review tax declarations and fine owners of vehicles that have not yet paid their taxes.

There is a warning too for those still importing right-hand-drive vehicles. For those vehicles already in the country, taxes and import fees can be paid, but right-hand-drive vehicles will be illegal from June next year. Any found to be still on the road after 30 June 2022 will be impounded and disassembled.
